Tangem Wallet (3-card)

Overview

The Tangem Wallet is one of the simplest self-custody devices you can buy: a set of NFC smart cards with no screen, no battery, and no buttons. To use it, you tap a card to your phone, and the Tangem app plus the card's built-in secure element sign the transaction. It's sold as a multi-card pack (typically two or three cards, all holding the same key) so you have redundant copies. For newcomers intimidated by seed phrases, the tap-to-sign simplicity is a real draw.

Under the hood, each card contains a certified secure element that generates and stores the private key, and by default Tangem can be used entirely without ever writing down a seed phrase — the cards are your backup. You can optionally enable a seed phrase if you want standard portability. Because there's no battery or screen to fail, the cards are extremely durable and pocketable.

The honest trade-offs are important. Because the card has no screen, you're verifying transaction details on your phone, so you're trusting the phone's display and the app more than you would with a device that shows the destination on its own screen — a meaningful difference in the malware threat model. Tangem's app is open-source but the card firmware is only partially so. For simplicity-first newcomers and small amounts it's a slick option; for larger holdings or maximal verifiability, a device with its own screen (Trezor, BitBox02, Coldcard) is the safer path.
