Overview
The Cypherock X1 takes a genuinely different approach to hardware wallets by eliminating the single seed phrase entirely. Instead of one 24-word backup that, if found, hands over everything, the X1 splits your private key using Shamir's Secret Sharing across a main tapping device and a set of four NFC 'CypherLock' cards. Your key is reconstructed only when you tap the required cards to the device — there is no complete seed sitting in any one place to be stolen, photographed, or found.
The pitch is compelling for a specific fear: losing or having someone find a written seed phrase. With the X1, you can distribute the cards across different locations, and an attacker needs a threshold of them plus the device to reconstruct the key. It uses a secure element, supports Bitcoin and many other coins, and can also store standard seed phrases for existing wallets if you want.
The honest caveats: this distributed model adds real complexity and new failure modes — you must manage and physically secure multiple cards, and losing too many below the recovery threshold means losing access. The hardware/firmware is only partially open-source. And the ecosystem is younger and less battle-tested than Trezor or Coldcard. For users whose primary anxiety is a single vulnerable seed backup, the X1 is a thoughtful design; for those who want proven simplicity, a conventional wallet plus a good steel backup may serve better.
