The Blockstream Jade is the cheapest credible open-source hardware wallet, and it punches well above its price. Made by Blockstream, it offers camera-based QR air-gapped signing, open-source firmware, and support for Bitcoin and Liquid, making it a natural pick for budget-minded Bitcoiners. Despite costing a fraction of flagship devices, it delivers the core security features that matter.

What's clever about the Jade is its 'blind oracle' security model. Rather than relying on a dedicated secure element chip, it can encrypt your seed and store it with the help of Blockstream's server — but in a way where the server sees only encrypted data and cannot access your keys, and you can also run it in a fully offline 'stateless' mode. It supports both USB and camera-QR air-gap workflows, and pairs with wallets like Green, Sparrow, and Specter.

The honest caveat is the hardware itself: the Jade uses a general-purpose microcontroller (ESP32-class), not a dedicated secure element, so its physical-attack resistance leans on its software design and the blind-oracle scheme. Security-conscious users who want a hardware secure element should understand this trade-off, or use stateless mode and a strong passphrase. For the price, though, the Jade is a remarkable value and a legitimate way into open-source, air-gap-capable self-custody.
