What is Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year celebrates the beginning of a new year in the Chinese calendar. Unlike the Gregorian calendar used in many Western countries, the Chinese calendar is calculated according to the moon.

There’s no fixed date for Chinese New Year but it usually falls in either January or February. The new year festival is celebrated over two weeks and involves spending time with family, eating traditional food and giving money in red envelopes.

What is Year of the Tiger

The Chinese Calendar is accompanied by a twelve year cycle, each year of which is assigned to an animal with its own distinct set of characteristics. 2022 is the Year of the Tiger.

People born in the year of the tiger are brave, passionate and love adventures. Each animal is split into a further five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. This year, for the first time since 1962, is the year of the water tiger. The water tiger is confident, curious and is a furiously fast learner.

How you can be a financial tiger this year

With a guardian tiger looking over your shoulder, 2022 is the year to pounce on chances to invest, learn and grow:

  • Strike first - Whether it's your first ever investment ever or just the first of the year, start early and set up a monthly plan
  • Soak up some knowledge, water tiger style. Try to learn something new about finance each week. Articles, videos and podcasts all count.
  • Be curious - investing is all about responsibly exploring risk. Don’t be afraid to try new things!

But the opportunities aren’t just written in the stars. For four consecutive years, between 2017 and 2021, Bitcoin prices dropped leading up to Chinese New Year. This is because many investors sell their assets to make sure they have enough cash in the weeks leading up to the festival.

As the year of the tiger, 2022 is an exciting time for a new beginning. So polish those claws, freshen your fur and give us your best growl because this year is yours for the taking.
